One small step is a giant leap for mankind they say. But when it comes to our lil ones' its a giant leap of imagination in ones' mind without guessing the obvious outcome of the tricks their mind plays on the structural establishment of this world. They keep a track of thought with no definite set of rules. This is what had been tried to portray in the famous pre-schoolers' book, "aabol-taabol" by Sukumar Roy.
The poet very beautifully integrates various concepts of child imaginations of spirits, living beings and inspirations from various real life like situations and expressing them poetically in a way a toddler skips one's thought from one topic to another. The book comes with various famous pictorial descriptions so you know what you had been imagining while reading the phrases. The rhythm of the poems don't get out of track but it may contain more than one rhyme scheme and variation of stress you have to imply while reading on from one phrase to another to signify its importance. These intonations are important concepts which must be taught to a toddler for your child shall know how a poem has to be read.
I had spent a fair share of time during my nursery days learning all the poems written in the book by heart. That did fetch me quite an applause when guests arrived and I got to be their clown of entertainment, acting all the poems and versing flawlessly one after another.
This book is carried on as a legend still. Bengal and parents there who know the fun one shares to teach their kids, these poems and to see them versing them back enacting each phrases. A child is a gift from heaven and for newly wed couples who marry out of love or had their destinies arranged. They must get a copy for their lil angel. Your child learns from you and these poems can become a very important part of his childhood. Let this legacy be carried on.
